Changes in transmural central venous pressure in man during hyperventilation.

چکیده
We demonstrated that large amounts of blood shift from the forearm veins during hyperventilation (2). If this effect were generalized in the periphery of the body the volume of blood in the central venous reservoir might increase. An increase in pressure in the central veins would be evidence to support this suggestion. The fall in peripheral venous pressure which occurs during hyperventilation (2, 3), however, implies that central venous pressure also decreases. This makes our thesis less attractive. Still, the transmural pressure (4), the net pressure acting to distend the central veins, could increase during overbreathing if the pressure surrounding the veins (intrapleural pressure) decreased more than did the pressure within them. This study was undertaken to assess the nature and magnitude of changes in mean transmural central venous pressure during hyperventilation and to see whether the changes were consistent with our suggestion that blood shifts centrally during overbreathing.

The increase in cardiac output during' isoproterenol administration has been attributed to a direct action on the heart causing it to extract blood more effectively from the central venous reservoir (1). Another suggestion is that isoproterenol constricts peripheral veins and causes blood to be pushed into the heart (2). The observation that right atrial pressure falls during infusion of the dr...
متن کاملThe Effect of Inhalation Anesthesia with Hyperventilation and Total Intravenous Anesthesia on Intracranial Pressure Control in Pediatrics with Craniosynostosis Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background: Intracranial pressure (ICP) control is one of the anesthesiologist challenges in craniosynostosis repair surgery, especially in multiple sutures involvement. The aim of this study was comparing the effect of two anesthesia methods including inhalation with hyperventilation and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on ICP control and surgeon satisfaction in pediatrics with craniosynost...
متن کاملCentral venous pressure and cardiac function during spaceflight.
Early in spaceflight, an apparently paradoxical condition occurs in which, despite an externally visible headward fluid shift, measured central venous pressure is lower but stroke volume and cardiac output are higher, and heart rate is unchanged from reference measurements made before flight. This paper presents a set of studies in which a simple three-compartment, steady-state model of cardiov...
متن کاملIntracranial pressure during recovery from nitrous oxide and halothane anaesthesia in neurosurgical patients.
Seven patients with intracranial disorders were studied during recovery from anaesthesia with nitrous oxide and halothane. Arterial, intracranial, and central venous pressure, and arterial carbon dioxide tension were measured and compared with the patient's clinical state. No patient had evidence of increased brain volume when the dura was closed. All had been hyperventilated during the surgica...
متن کاملChanges in central venous pressure after moderate hemorrhage and transfusion in man.
Changes in central venous pressure were recorded continuously before, during and for 40 to 50 minutes after hemorrhage and transfusion in the amounts of 6.5 cc. per Kg. and 8.1 cc. per Kg. The pressures obtained 15 to 20 minutes after onset of blood volume changes were independent of the rate of hemorrhage or transfusion. In the average subject of 70 Kg., AP/AV for zero time was 0.7 cm. of wate...
